Protect Your Home While You Are On Vacation

4/27/2022 (Permalink)

This summer looks to be a big travel season.  If you plan on traveling for more than a couple of days, you should make sure your home is properly protected while you're away.  It is common to check and double check to make sure that each window and door is properly locked, but you may be missing a couple of steps that will ensure your home is truly safe while you and your family are elsewhere. One key element to home safety while you are on vacation is to ensure that your home doesn’t look like you are gone.  Here's a few easy steps to not inadvertently alert others that your home is empty.

  1. Suspend mail and newspaper services.
  2. Arrange for lawn care services while you are gone. This will help make your home seem less abandoned to strangers.
  3. Install exterior lighting or motion detectors to deter burglars.
  4. Set up lights inside your home to automatically come on in the evening to give the impression that someone is inside the home. Be sure to have them turn off at a reasonable bedtime.
  5. Leave a radio playing inside your home so that sounds emanate from your home if someone comes to your front door. Give the impression to someone outside that there is someone inside.
  6. Wait to post vacation pictures on social media until you return home.  No need to advertise to everyone that you aren't home.

Hopefully these tips help to protect your home and give you more peace of mind during your next vacation.  If you do come home to some unwanted news, like a water leak from your bathroom or kitchen, call the experts at SERVPRO of Vacaville/Dixon/Fairfield/Davis.  We are Here to Help.  (707) 724-8977.
